Sohaïb Naïr nears full return as Algeria eye defensive boost

Sohaïb Naïr has resumed full training with French club En Avant Guingamp, marking a major step in his recovery from ankle surgery.

The 23-year-old Algerian defender had been sidelined since July after tearing a ligament, a setback that kept him out of the national team’s September and October camps.

Naïr now feels ready to return to action and aims to reclaim his place on the field.

“I am much better and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

“I should resume full training with the group in the week of October 20. I expect to be available for competition at the end of October or early November.”

His comeback comes as good news for Guingamp, who currently sit sixth in Ligue 2 but have struggled defensively.

The French side has conceded 21 goals in just 10 matches, the weakest record in the division’s top half.

Naïr’s presence could help stabilize the team’s backline and restore balance to their defense.

For Algeria, his return offers an encouraging option ahead of a crucial period.

The national team has lacked depth in central defense, with Aïssa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaïni often left without reliable replacements.

Naïr had integrated into Vladimir Petkovic’s plans during the March 2025 training camp but never made his debut before injury halted his momentum.

His progress will come under close watch as Algeria prepare for their November camp.

However, given his recent recovery, his inclusion appears unlikely for the upcoming friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Zimbabwe in Jeddah.

Petkovic is expected to rely on the pairing of Mohamed Amine Tougaï and Samir Chergui, who impressed in recent matches.

Still, Naïr’s situation could change rapidly if he returns to form with Guingamp.

Consistent performances at club level could reignite his chances of selection for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.

Petkovic remains attentive to his development and values his potential contribution to the team’s defensive structure.

Naïr’s determination to return stronger reflects his resilience.

Having recovered from surgery and endured months of rehabilitation, he now focuses on regaining rhythm and confidence on the pitch.

His return not only strengthens Guingamp’s defensive setup but also brings optimism to Algerian fans eager for more options in central defense.

As the 2025 AFCON approaches, every appearance and performance will matter for the young defender.

If he maintains fitness and form, Naïr could transform from an injured hopeful into a key contender for Algeria’s backline.
