Senegal coach Pape Thiaw is facing difficult decisions ahead of the announcement of his 26-man squad for the World Cup, with concerns over captain Kalidou Koulibaly’s fitness adding uncertainty to the selection process.

The squad for the tournament in the United States is due to be revealed on 21 May 2026, and the reduction in FIFA squad limits from 28 players at the previous Africa Cup of Nations to 26 means several established names could miss out.

While the goalkeeping department appears largely settled, uncertainty remains across other areas of the squad, particularly in central defence where Koulibaly’s injury has become a growing concern for the Senegalese coaching staff.

The Al-Hilal defender has been sidelined since 8 April after suffering what has been described as an “unusual hematoma”.

His absence has left Senegal monitoring his recovery closely ahead of the tournament, with no clear indication yet over whether he will be fully fit in time for the World Cup.

Koulibaly’s condition presents one of the most significant issues facing Thiaw as he prepares to finalise his squad.

The defender remains one of Senegal’s most experienced and influential players, and uncertainty over his availability could force major changes to the defensive structure of the team.

Among the potential alternatives, Mamadou Sarr is seen as a leading option to step into the squad should Koulibaly fail to recover in time.

Other defenders under consideration reportedly include Paris FC’s Moustapha Mbow, Lorient player Abdoulaye Faye and the experienced Abdoulaye Seck.

Another possible inclusion is Malang Sarr, whose performances this season have attracted attention after becoming the only Senegalese player named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season.

His form has strengthened speculation that he could earn a place in the final selection as Senegal search for defensive stability.

Away from defence, competition for places is also intensifying in attack, where several difficult choices are expected before the final list is submitted.

Boulaye Dia’s position in the squad appears uncertain following a difficult spell at Lazio, while Bamba Dieng’s strong season has reportedly improved his chances of selection.

Dieng is increasingly viewed as a possible backup option to Nicolas Jackson, whose place in the attacking setup appears more secure.

Another attacking decision centres on whether experience or recent form should carry greater weight in selection.

Habib Diallo remains an established figure within the national team, but Chérif Ndiaye’s recent performances have increased pressure on the coaching staff as they evaluate their options.

The competition for places reflects the depth available to Senegal ahead of the tournament, but the reduced squad size means several members of the squad that won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations could be left out.

In midfield, there appears to be greater continuity, with Idrissa Gana Gueye, Lamine Camara and Pape Matar Sarr expected to form the core of the squad.

However, even in that area there are uncertainties, with Mamadou Lamine Camara among the players whose position may be affected by the tighter squad restrictions.

According to Ndarinfo, Thiaw still has several days remaining before making his final decisions.

The Senegal coach now faces the challenge of balancing experience, current form and fitness concerns as he attempts to build a squad capable of representing the country strongly on football’s biggest stage.

With the announcement date approaching, attention continues to focus on Koulibaly’s recovery and the difficult choices that will shape Senegal’s World Cup campaign.
