Senegal headline Group J in AFCON 2027 qualifiers

African football heavyweights Senegal will headline Group J of the qualification series for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, setting up an exciting battle against Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, marking a historic moment for East African football as the region prepares to welcome Africa’s biggest football spectacle after 51-years.

Senegal enter the qualifiers as overwhelming favourites in Group J thanks to their pedigree, experience, and world-class squad depth. The Teranga Lions have established themselves as one of the dominant forces on the continent over the last decade, consistently competing at the highest level in both Africa and on the global stage.

Led by a golden generation featuring several Europe-based stars, Senegal will be aiming not only to secure qualification comfortably but also to position themselves as serious contenders for the AFCON 2027 crown. Their blend of defensive solidity, tactical discipline, and attacking quality makes them the standout side in the group.

However, the road to qualification is unlikely to be straightforward. Mozambique continue to show significant improvement and have become one of the continent’s emerging sides in recent years. Their growing confidence and attacking style could make them dangerous opponents capable of springing surprises during the campaign.

Sudan, meanwhile, remain one of the most unpredictable teams in African football. Known for their physicality, resilience, and passionate support, the Falcons of Jediane have often proven difficult to break down, especially on home soil. They will believe they have what it takes to challenge for a qualification spot despite being considered underdogs.

Ethiopia also return with ambitions of making a statement in the qualifiers. The Walias have a rich football history and continue to rebuild with a younger generation eager to restore the nation’s status in continental football. Their technical style and determination could make Group J one of the most competitive pools in the qualification series.

The expanded spotlight on AFCON 2027 is already generating excitement across the continent, particularly because of the historic hosting arrangement involving Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The three East African nations are expected to deliver a vibrant and culturally rich tournament that could further elevate football development within the region.

With Senegal carrying the favourites tag and the remaining nations eager to upset the odds, Group J promises drama, intensity, and high-stakes football as the race to AFCON 2027 officially begins.

CAF has also condensed the qualification schedule because of the short period before the finals, which are scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

Matchdays one and two will be played between September 21 and October 6, 2026, while matchdays three and four are set for November 9 to 17, 2026. The final two rounds of qualifiers will take place from March 22 to 30, 2027.
