Senegal faces setback ahead of 2026 World Cup qualifiers
Senegal’s national football team has faced an unexpected challenge as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team has been forced to make a last-minute change to their lineup due to an injury to young defender Seydou Sano.
Sano, a 19-year-old player for Al-Gharafa, was set to make his debut for the Teranga Lions. However, an injury sustained before the team’s rally has ruled him out of the crucial matches against DR Congo and Mauritania.
In response to this setback, Senegal’s head coach Aliou Cissé acted swiftly to find a replacement.
Abdoulaye Niakhate Ndiaye has been called up to fill the gap left by Sano. Ndiaye joined the national team in Diamniadio on Monday, ready to step in for the two critical fixtures in June.
This prompt adjustment aims to ensure that the team remains competitive as they strive to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Senegal squad has gathered in Dakar to commence their preparation for the qualifiers.
The first training session took place at the annex of the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, although it was noted that eight players were absent.
Among the missing was star forward Sadio Mané, who was occupied with Al Nassr on the final day of the Saudi Pro League season.
Despite these initial hurdles, the Teranga Lions are focused on their goal.
Coach Cissé and his team are working diligently to refine their strategy and ensure that the players are in peak condition for the matches ahead.
The absences and changes in the squad are viewed as opportunities to test the depth and resilience of the team.
As the countdown to the qualifiers continues, Senegalese fans remain hopeful and supportive. The team’s ability to adapt and overcome these early challenges will be crucial in their quest for World Cup glory.
The upcoming matches against DR Congo and Mauritania are set to be pivotal moments in their campaign, with the entire nation watching closely.
