Senegal duo Lamine Camara and Niakhaté lead fierce race for Marc-Vivien Foé award
Senegalese duo Lamine Camara and Moussa Niakhaté alongside Mali star Mamadou Sangaré have made the final shortlist for the Marc-Vivien Foé award.
The trio headline the shortlist following their remarkable campaigns with their respective clubs this season. Camara and Niakhaté have been outstanding for Monaco and Lyon in the current campaign. Completing the trio is Sangaré, who has been a driving force behind RC Lens’ consistency this season.
Named in honor of the late Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé, the award is jointly presented by France 24 and Radio France Internationale. It recognizes the best African player competing in the French top flight and remains one of the most respected individual honors for African footballers in Europe.
This year’s finalists have each left a significant mark on the campaign through consistency, influence, and leadership.
Camara, one of Senegal’s brightest young prospects, has enjoyed a breakout season in Monaco’s midfield. His composure on the ball, ability to dictate tempo, and defensive work rate have made him a key figure in his side’s push for a strong league finish. Week after week, the young midfielder has demonstrated maturity beyond his years, seamlessly blending creativity with discipline.
At the back, Niakhaté has been a pillar of strength for Lyon. The experienced defender has brought stability and organization to his team’s defense, often stepping up in crucial moments. His leadership qualities and aerial dominance have proven invaluable, particularly in high-pressure fixtures where Lyon needed resilience.
Meanwhile, Sangaré has quietly built one of the most impressive seasons among African players in France. The Malian midfielder has been central to Lens’ tactical setup, contributing both defensively and offensively. His ability to break up play, transition quickly, and support attacking moves has made him indispensable, earning praise for his consistency and work ethic.
The presence of two Senegalese players among the finalists highlights the country’s continued production of elite talent capable of excelling on Europe’s biggest stages. It also underscores the growing influence of African footballers in Ligue 1, where they continue to shape the league’s competitive landscape.
With all three players delivering exceptional performances throughout the season, the race for the award remains wide open. The winner is set to be announced on May 11, a date that will crown the most outstanding African player in France and add another name to the illustrious history of the Marc-Vivien Foé Prize.
As anticipation builds, fans across Africa and beyond await the final verdict, eager to see which of these deserving stars will claim one of the continent’s most coveted individual honors.
