David Accam says selection battle gives Ghana coach ‘good headache’ before World Cup

Former Ghana forward David Accam says the Black Stars’ growing competition for places could be one of the biggest positives for head coach Carlos Queiroz following the team’s 1-1 draw with Wales on Tuesday.

Ghana appeared on course for victory at the Cardiff City Stadium after substitute Caleb Yirenkyi scored in the 66th minute.

However, Wales rescued a draw through Lewis Koumas deep into stoppage time. Despite the result, several Ghana players impressed after coming off the bench, creating a strong selection dilemma for Queiroz ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Accam believes the friendly demonstrated the depth available to the Black Stars manager, especially after a number of fringe players delivered eye-catching performances.

“So, yeah, it had a positive effect on the team, and it’s a good headache for a coach to have,” he said on Joy Prime TV.

The former Ghana international said the match allowed Queiroz to assess different options across the squad after only a short period working with the team.

“I think, at the moment, he has a fair idea of what he has in camp. We’ll see where we go from here.”

Ghana looked more threatening after the introduction of players such as Ernest Nuamah, Christopher Bonsu Baah, Inaki Williams and Yirenkyi. Nuamah, in particular, caused constant problems for the Welsh defence with his pace and direct running.

While the late equaliser denied the Black Stars victory, the performance provided valuable lessons for Queiroz as he fine-tunes his squad ahead of the tournament.

Ghana begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in Group L.
