Samuel Eto’o has officially become a member of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) executive committee following his election on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
His appointment marks a new chapter for the Cameroonian football legend, with CAF President Patrice Motsepe urging all parties to move beyond past conflicts.
Eto’o, the current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), was elected to the CAF executive committee by acclamation.
His inclusion comes after a period of tension between him and the governing body, particularly following disciplinary actions that were later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
In his remarks after the election, Motsepe spoke of the need for unity and emphasized the importance of focusing on the future rather than dwelling on past disputes.
“Samuel Eto’o was elected as one of the leaders, the most important thing is to support him,” said Motsepe. “The executive committee made a decision that was overturned by the CAS.
We must ensure that everything that happened with Eto’o in the past remains in the past.
It should not be held against him. I think he has a contribution to make.
Cameroonian football under Eto’o’s leadership will return to its glory days.
Motsepe, who was also re-elected as CAF president on the same day, expressed confidence in Eto’o’s ability to make a meaningful impact on African football.
With past disputes now behind him, Eto’o is set to serve a four-year term on the executive committee, where he will work towards advancing the sport across the continent.
His leadership at FECAFOOT has already been marked by efforts to revitalize Cameroonian football, and his new role at CAF provides a broader platform to implement change on a continental scale.
As one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, Eto’o’s appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the CAF leadership, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to strengthening the game at all levels.
