Oumar Sako, the captain of Niger and a key figure at FK Rostov, has said he is aiming to reach the Champions League level as he reflects on a demanding season in Russia and considers his next career move.

The 26-year-old central defender helped Rostov secure their place in the Russian Premier League this week with a 3-1 win over FK Akron Togliatti, a result that confirmed top-flight survival after a difficult campaign.

Speaking about his ambitions and development, Sako stressed that while the season has been challenging collectively, it has also been an important step in his personal growth as a player.

Survival secured after a difficult campaign

Rostov’s victory on Monday ensured they avoided a more complicated end to the season, with Sako playing an important role in the decisive fixture.

“It hasn’t been an easy season for us. We only secured our place in the league this Monday. But hey, that’s football, and the most important thing is that we achieved that goal. On an individual level, things went more or less well. There were periods when I didn’t play, but then I was able to seize my opportunity.”

Despite fluctuations in playing time, the Niger international said he was satisfied with how he responded when called upon, highlighting resilience as a key part of his campaign.

Positive assessment of Russian experience

Sako also gave a strong endorsement of his time in Russia, describing the league as both demanding and instructive.

“Honestly, it was great. I learned a lot, especially from Valeri Karpine, the former Rostov coach. He helped me enormously, and I wish I had known him earlier in my career. It’s a league that suits me. I love everything about it: the intensity, the commitment… Overall, it’s been a positive experience.”

He added that the competitive nature of the league has helped him develop physically and tactically, even as Russian clubs continue to operate outside European competitions due to sanctions.

From his perspective, the internal standards at his club remain high.

“No, politics doesn’t impact football on the pitch. What I feel is that everything is being done to ensure we are competitive. That’s the case within our club, where we are given the necessary resources. So yes, we’re missing out on European competition, but otherwise, we have everything we need.”

Ambition to reach higher level remains

Looking ahead, Sako made clear that he is open to a new challenge and is actively targeting a step up in his career.

“Yes, I always aspire to take on new and more challenging situations. There isn’t a footballer who doesn’t want that. I too want to take that next step, and I’m surrounding myself with the right people to achieve it.”

While no specific destination has been chosen, the defender confirmed that discussions are being handled by his representatives and that he is keeping his options open ahead of the next transfer window.

“Not at the moment. My agent is handling it, and we’re managing it internally. He presents me with offers, guides me, and then we consider the best options. It also depends on the projects that are on the table. For my part, I’m open to anything. And if I could play in the Champions League, I wouldn’t say no. That would be fantastic. There’s always room for improvement. You learn at any age. If I change clubs, I’m bound to learn new things. That’s essential.”

Niger rebuilding with long-term goals

On the international stage, Sako also spoke about Niger’s ongoing rebuilding process as the national team works towards returning to major tournaments.

“Things are going really well. Niger is rebuilding with young players and a few veterans. We’re trying to contribute. In two or three years, the team will be ready. But we want to secure this qualification right now, because it’s been 12 or 13 years since the country last participated in the Africa Cup of Nations. As long as we don’t participate in a major tournament, there’s a void. In the World Cup qualifiers, we finished second in our group, and that was already quite an achievement.”

Focus on fitness and what comes next

For now, Sako says his immediate focus is maintaining fitness and consistency as he approaches the next stage of his career.

“What can we wish you for the future? Fewer injuries. As for the rest, we are believers, and we let fate take its course.”

With Rostov preparing for their next league fixture against Zenit Saint Petersburg, attention will soon return to domestic action.

But for Sako, the bigger picture is already forming around ambition, opportunity, and a possible move to European football’s highest level.
