Sadibou Sané has spoken about his ambition to represent Senegal at senior level, crediting his development, personal journey and close friendship with international teammate Lamine Camara as key sources of motivation.

The 21-year-old defender, who joined FC Metz in July 2023 from Génération Foot after winning the 2022–23 Senegalese Ligue 1 title, continues to establish himself in European football.

He made his debut for the French side on 3 September 2023 in a 2-2 draw against Stade de Reims, shortly after signing a five-year contract.

Reflecting on his progress, Sané expressed pride in how far he has come, despite acknowledging the challenges he has faced along the way.

“I am extremely proud of the journey I have taken. Today, I am living my dream. My path hasn’t been easy, but I always believed in myself.”

The defender, who grew up in southern Senegal, described his early years as being shaped by a strong passion for football and a clear determination to succeed.

“I grew up in a small town in southern Senegal, always with a ball at my feet. I always imagined myself becoming a professional footballer.”

Since moving to Europe, Sané says adapting both on and off the pitch has been a learning process, with personal growth proving just as important as his football development.

“At first, I was reserved. But I met some exceptional people who helped me integrate. In football, you have to overcome your shyness.”

After a difficult start to the season, including two red cards, Sané has worked to regain his focus with the help of mental coaching and support within the squad.

“I work with a mental coach. It helps me better manage my emotions and stay focused, even in difficult moments.”

He is also beginning to take on a more vocal role within the dressing room, learning from senior players while guiding younger teammates.

“I listen a lot to the advice of my more experienced players and I try, in turn, to mentor the younger ones.”

Away from club football, Sané remains closely connected to his roots and family in Senegal, speaking emotionally about the distance from home and the bond he shares with Camara.

“I miss my family terribly. I need to go home to recharge.”

“I grew up on the same street as him. We did everything together. Our families are very close.”

Camara’s success on the international stage has further fuelled Sané’s determination to follow a similar path, with the defender openly targeting a future with the national team.

“I was so proud of him. It motivates me even more to one day represent my country and, why not, win a trophy together.”
