Rosenior backs Fofana after apology as Chelsea form hits new low
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed that Wesley Fofana has apologised after the defender stormed down the tunnel during Saturday’s 1–0 defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The incident occurred in the 81st minute when Fofana was substituted for midfielder Enzo Fernández.
Visibly frustrated, the French international bypassed the dugout and his manager, heading straight for the dressing room while the Blues trailed in a pivotal Premier League clash.
Addressing the media on Monday, Rosenior was quick to downplay any talk of a rift, insisting that the player’s reaction was born out of a desire to win rather than a lack of respect.
The manager suggested that the outburst was a byproduct of the mounting pressure at the club
“As a guy, he’s not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve.
“I’ve spoken to him about it and he’s just disappointed that we’re losing the game.
“I do think he could show emotion in a better way’ and that’s something that I’ve spoken about but the optics on that is not the reality.
“The reality is I’ve got a really good group. They’re working really, really hard for me and for the staff and for the club.
“At the moment, the results aren’t going that way and then people start reading more into it than what it actually is.
“Wes apologised for his reaction but these are young players who are going to make mistakes in the moment.”
However, the reconciliation comes at a volatile time for the West London club. Since Rosenior’s appointment in January 2026, Chelsea has struggled to find consistency.
The loss to Manchester United saw them slip to sixth in the table, and the atmosphere darkened further on Tuesday night following a blunt 3–0 defeat away at Brighton.
That loss marked Chelsea’s fifth consecutive Premier League defeat—a run in which they have failed to find the back of the net.
