Cristiano Ronaldo ended his Portugal career without informing manager Jorge Jesus, according to Portuguese newspaper Record, revealing the extent of the breakdown between the captain and his coach.
Ronaldo is reported to have told Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca about his decision, but did not contact Jesus to explain that he would no longer represent the national team.
The decision came as a surprise because Jesus had been preparing to include Ronaldo in the Portugal squad due to be announced on Friday. The manager intended to continue relying on his captain, only to discover that their relationship had deteriorated beyond repair.
Record reports that Ronaldo had not replied to messages sent by Jesus during the previous few weeks. The lack of communication highlighted the growing distance between the two men and suggested their relationship had reached a complete impasse.
The events in Copenhagen are understood to have been the decisive turning point. Attempts to restore contact afterwards failed to bring them closer, leaving the relationship heading towards an unexpected conclusion between Portugal’s record international appearance-maker and his manager.
Ronaldo confirmed his decision in a video posted on his official social media accounts on Thursday. He announced that he would not return to play for Portugal, despite Jesus having been ready to select him once again.
The forward leaves international football at the age of 41 after making 234 appearances and scoring 146 goals for his country. He remains the most-capped player and the leading goalscorer in international football, with a record that will be difficult to match.
However, the end of his Portugal career unfolded in very different circumstances from the farewell many had expected. Rather than leaving the national team alongside his team-mates and manager in a public celebration, Ronaldo’s announcement came amid a serious dispute with Jesus.
The circumstances have raised questions about what happened behind the scenes and how the relationship between the captain and coach reached such a decisive ending. Ronaldo’s choice to notify Proenca but not Jesus added another layer to a departure that had otherwise been expected to centre on his extraordinary contribution to Portugal.
Jesus had been preparing for the next squad announcement and expected Ronaldo to remain part of his plans. Instead, the manager learned of the player’s international retirement as the relationship between them reached its final stage.
