Ronald Araujo’s Barcelona future takes Liverpool turn after Hansi Flick discussion

Ronald Araujo is set to leave Barcelona for Liverpool on a season-long loan after a frank conversation with manager Hansi Flick helped convince the Uruguay defender to seek regular first-team football elsewhere.

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Araujo temporarily, with the English club taking full responsibility for his wages during the loan. The deal will also give Liverpool the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

The agreement has been reached between Liverpool, Barcelona and the player, following approval from Barcelona sporting director Deco.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Araujo’s representatives travelled to Barcelona on Friday afternoon and the move was completed within a matter of hours.

The 26-year-old’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2031, but he does not want to sever his long-term connection with the Catalan club permanently. The loan arrangement therefore gives him the chance to pursue more playing time while keeping open the possibility of returning to Barcelona.

Araujo is expected to say goodbye to his team-mates this morning before Barcelona travel to Italy for a pre-season triangular friendly involving Udinese and Nottingham Forest.

The defender’s decision follows what was described as a surprising conversation with Flick. The meeting had already been scheduled for the centre-back’s return from pre-season, but it left Araujo with a clear understanding of his expected position in the squad.

Flick told him that Barcelona’s plan for the current campaign matched what Deco had previously discussed with the player’s representative in May. Araujo was expected to remain in the same position in the defensive pecking order, with limited involvement and what would effectively be a secondary role.

Araujo accepted that assessment and decided to look for an opportunity that could provide more regular minutes. Liverpool, one of the leading clubs in the Premier League, have monitored him for several years and will now have the opportunity to bring him to England.

The Uruguay international joined Barcelona from Boston River in 2018 and established himself as one of the club’s key defenders. However, the prospect of a reduced role under Flick prompted him to consider a temporary move rather than remain at Camp Nou without consistent first-team football.

As part of the agreement, Liverpool will cover his complete salary for the duration of the loan and will retain the option to sign him permanently once the season ends.

Barcelona’s captain is expected to travel to England during the weekend to begin a new chapter in his career in the Premier League. His immediate departure allows him to pursue a more prominent role while Barcelona retain control over a player who remains under contract with the club until 2031.
