Riyad Mahrez’s special contract termination clause sparks potential Al Ahli summer exit
Algerian superstar Riyad Mahrez could be at the centre of a major summer transfer saga amid a surprising clause in his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.
The former Manchester City winger, who joined Al Ahli in the summer of 2023 on a four-year deal, is reportedly under contract until the end of next season. However, fresh details suggest his future may not be as secure as previously believed.
Per reports, Mahrez’s contract includes a special termination clause that allows either party to end the agreement during a specific window between June 1 and June 30, 2026, for a fee of around $15 million.
Outside of that window, any termination of the contract would reportedly require the full remaining value of the deal to be paid, estimated at approximately $40 million.
The revelation has immediately fueled speculation over the Algerian international’s long-term future in Saudi Arabia, with several clubs reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
Turkish giants Fenerbahçe are among the clubs said to be interested in securing the services of the former Premier League star should an opportunity arise.
Mahrez has been one of Al Ahli’s standout performers since his arrival, playing a key role in the club’s recent success, including their AFC Champions League triumphs and Saudi Super Cup victory.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential players in the squad, the Algerian winger has delivered consistent performances, bringing experience, creativity and leadership to the Saudi side.
Despite his importance to the team, the emergence of the clause has opened the door to potential uncertainty, with the upcoming summer window now viewed as a crucial period in deciding his future.
For now, Mahrez remains focused on his duties at Al Ahli, but the growing transfer talk suggests another major chapter in his career could soon unfold.
