Republic of Congo appoint Claude Le Roy as new head coach
Veteran French tactician Claude Le Roy has been appointed as the new head coach of the Republic of the Congo.
The 78-year-old manager, widely respected for his long career across African football, formally signed his contract with the Congolese Football Federation on 22 June in Brazzaville, marking his return to the international stage with the “Red Devils.”
Le Roy’s appointment was confirmed just days after agreement was reached between both parties, with the experienced coach now tasked with rebuilding and stabilising the national team as they look to re-establish themselves in continental and global competition.
He will be assisted in his new role by former professional and respected coach Omar Daf, who joins as assistant manager in what is expected to be a fresh technical structure aimed at long-term development and competitiveness.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Le Roy immediately outlined his ambitions for the project, stressing the importance of strengthening the squad by attracting eligible players from across Europe.
A key part of his early strategy involves convincing highly-rated dual-national players such as Dylan Bakwa and Bradley Locko to commit their international futures to the Republic of Congo.
The move reflects Le Roy’s well-known approach throughout his managerial career, particularly during his previous spells across Africa, where he often focused on identifying diaspora talent to improve squad depth and quality.
The Frenchman brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed several African national teams and guided multiple sides through major continental campaigns, earning a reputation as one of the most seasoned coaches on the continent.
For Congo, his arrival signals a clear shift in ambition, with the federation aiming to rebuild a competitive squad capable of challenging more consistently on the international stage.
Le Roy is expected to begin assessing the current squad immediately, with early training camps and scouting missions likely to follow as he begins shaping his long-term vision for the team.
As preparations get underway, attention will now turn to how quickly the experienced coach can integrate new ideas, attract key players, and restore competitiveness to the Congolese national setup.
