Rennes weigh ambitious Nayef Aguerd return as release clause deadline looms

Stade Rennais are exploring a move to bring Nayef Aguerd back to Roazhon Park, but a sizeable release clause, tight payment terms and an imminent deadline are threatening to derail the plan.

The Brittany club want to reinforce their defence before the new season and have made an approach for their former centre-back, according to Foot Mercato. However, at this stage a deal for the Morocco international is described as far from straightforward.

Aguerd, now 30, spent two seasons at Rennes between 2020 and 2022 before leaving for England. His performances during that spell left a strong impression at the club, where he is still held in high regard by decision-makers.

Rennes see him as an ideal candidate to strengthen the back line immediately, with his profile, experience and detailed knowledge of the club viewed as major assets. The intention is to add a defender who can slot straight into the team rather than one who needs time to adapt.

Release clause and deadline complicate talks

The main obstacle for Rennes is Aguerd’s release clause, which is set at €15m. The clause reportedly has to be paid in a single instalment, leaving no scope for spreading the fee over several payments.

That requirement significantly raises the financial bar for Rennes, who must find the full sum up front if they wish to trigger the clause.

Complicating matters further, the release clause is only valid until 31 July. The narrow window gives Rennes very little room to manoeuvre and forces the club to move quickly if they want to turn their interest into a concrete agreement.

The combination of the financial demands and the looming deadline makes the operation particularly complex. Without a rapid breakthrough or a change in the conditions attached to the transfer, a return to Brittany for Aguerd remains difficult to achieve.

Contract situation and market value

The coming weeks are expected to be decisive for the defender’s future. Aguerd’s market value is estimated at €15m by Transfermarkt, in line with the figure set in his release clause.

The Atlas Lion is under contract with OM until 30 June 2030, giving the French club a strong position in any negotiations once the clause expires. In France, Nayef Aguerd earns an annual salary of €4,910,000, the equivalent of 3,191,500,000 FCFA.

For now, Rennes’ interest is clear, their need in defence is pressing, but the financial and contractual framework around Aguerd means any reunion will be difficult to finalise unless conditions shift in their favour.
