Renard courted by four national teams as future nears decision point

French coach Herve Renard is at the centre of an intense international tug-of-war, with at least four national teams vying for his signature as a decision on his next job is expected within days.

Renard, who most recently led Tunisia at the 2026 World Cup, has emerged as a leading contender for the South Korea national team job, according to transfer market journalist Santi Aouna.

The 55-year-old is also understood to be the top choice to replace Belgian coach Hugo Broos with South Africa, while his name is being strongly discussed within the Senegalese FA and is viewed as a potential first option for Algeria if a change is made.

The coming days are expected to be decisive in determining where Renard will work next, amid growing competition for his services.

South Korea move under serious consideration

South Korea are believed to be among the most active in pushing for Renard, placing him high on their shortlist as they search for a new head coach.

According to Aouna, the former Saudi Arabia and Ivory Coast manager is “among the leading candidates” to take charge of the Asian side, who are looking to rebuild following recent setbacks in major tournaments.

Renard’s international pedigree – including his famous shock victory with Saudi Arabia over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup and two Africa Cup of Nations titles with Zambia and Ivory Coast – is thought to be a key factor in South Korea’s interest.

South Africa and Senegal also in the frame

In Africa, demand for Renard appears even stronger.

The Frenchman is described as the frontrunner to succeed Hugo Broos with the South Africa national team. Broos, who led Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is expected to be replaced, with Renard at the top of the list of possible successors.

At the same time, the Senegalese Football Federation is also seriously considering Renard as it seeks a new manager to lead the “Teranga Lions”. His name has reportedly been “strongly proposed” within the federation as discussions continue over the team’s future direction.

Senegal, Africa Cup of Nations champions in 2021 and one of the continent’s most consistent sides in recent years, are keen to appoint a high-profile coach capable of maintaining their status among Africa’s elite.

Algeria watching Petkovic situation

Renard’s prospects are not limited to countries actively in transition. In Algeria, he is being lined up as the preferred option should there be any change in the position of current head coach Vladimir Petkovic.

The Frenchman “may become the first choice” to coach the “Fennecs” if Petkovic leaves his role, the report says. That possibility keeps Algeria firmly in the race, even though no immediate departure has been confirmed.

World Cup stint with Tunisia

Renard’s latest appearance on the touchline at a major tournament came with Tunisia at the 2026 World Cup.

He took charge of the Carthage Eagles for two group-stage matches, against Japan and the Netherlands, after the sacking of coach Sabri Lamouchi following a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening game.

Although his time with Tunisia was brief, it has kept him firmly in the international spotlight and reinforced his reputation as a coach regularly trusted to step in during moments of crisis.

With multiple federations now pushing to secure his services, Renard is poised to make one of the most closely watched coaching decisions of the current international cycle.
