Real Madrid’s Mbappe and Vinicius partnership remains a work in progress

Real Madrid’s attacking partnership between Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior has yet to develop into the collective threat expected of two of the world’s leading forwards, according to a report by Marca.

The pair are regarded as the Spanish club’s biggest stars and most powerful attacking weapons, but their individual quality has not consistently translated into a productive on-field connection. After two seasons together at Real Madrid, the relationship remains an opportunity rather than an established source of goals.

Real Madrid have played 125 matches since Mbappe and Vinicius first appeared together, in the 2-0 win over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on 14 August 2024. They have shared the pitch in 89 of those games, during which Real Madrid scored 192 goals.

Only 19 of those goals came from direct cooperation between the two forwards, representing 9.8% of the team’s total in matches they played together. Since Mbappe joined Real Madrid, the club have scored 269 goals in all competitions, a figure which further underlines the relatively small contribution made by their direct partnership.

The balance of their link-up has also favoured Vinicius. Marca says the Brazil international has been the player who most often begins moves that end with Mbappe scoring.

Of the 15 direct combinations that started with Vinicius and finished with a goal from Mbappe, three came from penalties awarded after the Brazilian winger had won the spot-kick. The figures suggest that, in their most successful exchanges, Vinicius has more commonly been the creator while Mbappe has provided the finishing touch.

That trend became less productive last season, when the duo combined directly for only nine goals. Seven of those moves were initiated by Vinicius, while Mbappe was responsible for starting the other two.

There was no immediate improvement at the start of the 2026-27 campaign. Neither player contributed directly to a goal in Real Madrid’s first competitive match of the season, while both produced performances below the level expected of them.

Vinicius, in particular, struggled against the opponent’s defensive organisation. He was unable to show the individual quality and dribbling ability that have become central to his game.

The issue now presents one of the main challenges for Jose Mourinho, who has taken over as Real Madrid’s new head coach. His task will be to find a system that allows the strengths of Vinicius and Mbappe to complement one another, rather than leaving the team reliant mainly on their separate moments of brilliance.

After two seasons playing alongside each other, Mourinho must discover the formula that can turn their considerable individual talent into a more effective collective attacking force. For Real Madrid, the expectation is not simply that both forwards will remain dangerous on their own, but that their partnership will become one of the defining features of the side.
