Real Madrid host RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, 21 October, with Yan Diomande set to come up against his former side in the UEFA Champions League.
The match is the third game of the league phase, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT (21:00 in Spain). Real Madrid are seeking to maintain their perfect start to the competition and strengthen their position among its leading teams.
Jose Mourinho’s side come into the fixture after recovering from a dramatic 4-3 victory over AS Roma in the previous round with a 4-1 La Liga win against Sevilla FC. They will look to continue that momentum in front of their home supporters, although the game comes only three days before the Clasico against FC Barcelona.
Real Madrid will need to guard against the threat posed by Leipzig, who are expected to look for opportunities to exploit space behind the Spanish side. The German club will also provide a significant test of the hosts’ defensive organisation ahead of the weekend’s domestic fixture.
The game carries particular significance for Diomande, who officially joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig in August 2026. The 19-year-old Ivorian international winger has signed a contract with the Spanish club until 30 June 2033 and has been included in the squad for Wednesday’s match.
Diomande will therefore face his former club for the first time in Real Madrid colours. His involvement makes him one of the African players to watch in the European fixture.
RB Leipzig travel to Madrid hoping to build on their first European win of the season, a 1-0 success against PSV Eindhoven. However, Marco Rose’s team also have a heavy domestic defeat to overcome after losing 6-1 to Bayern Munich in the league.
Against Real Madrid’s attacking strength, Leipzig will need to improve both their defensive solidity and their efficiency in front of goal if they are to leave the Santiago Bernabeu with a positive result.
