Real Madrid raise stakes in bid to keep Vinicius Junior from Arsenal

Real Madrid have stepped up their efforts to retain Vinicius Junior by presenting the Brazil winger’s representatives with improved terms for a new contract, in an attempt to fend off growing interest from Arsenal.

Negotiations between Vinicius and the Spanish club have been ongoing for about 18 months but had reached an impasse in recent weeks. According to a report published by the BBC, Real Madrid have now sought to break the deadlock with a revised proposal.

The 26-year-old is believed to regard the new financial terms as “satisfactory”, giving Real Madrid president Florentino Perez renewed hope that an agreement can be reached.

Vinicius has entered the final 12 months of his current contract, which runs until 2027. That situation has attracted Arsenal, who have identified him as a priority target to strengthen their left-wing position.

The BBC says Arsenal are prepared to “accelerate their interest” immediately if Vinicius rejects Real Madrid’s improved offer. The Premier League club are monitoring the situation closely and could move quickly should the player decide his future lies away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid are now waiting for Vinicius to make the final decision. The club’s coaching staff, led by returning manager Jose Mourinho, are hopeful he will remain with the side he previously described as his “dream club”.

Vinicius returned to training with Real Madrid on Monday after completing his involvement with Brazil at the World Cup. He underwent medical tests before taking part in his first session ahead of the new season.

Financial disagreement at centre of talks

The main obstacle in the negotiations has been financial. Vinicius is seeking “a significant financial recognition” that reflects his status as Real Madrid’s leading star.

He has made 375 appearances for the club and scored 128 goals since arriving from Flamengo. His representatives believe his contribution and standing within the team should be reflected in the proposed salary.

Real Madrid, however, have traditionally placed importance on maintaining a balanced wage structure under Perez. That policy has complicated the discussions and contributed to the prolonged stalemate between the two sides.

Vinicius signed a contract extension with Real Madrid three years ago and has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain at the club “for many years”. He joined from Flamengo and has since become one of the defining players of the team.

The latest proposal represents Real Madrid’s attempt to settle the issue before Arsenal can take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding his future. The Spanish club want the winger to continue his career at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Arsenal are ready to explore a move if he declines the new terms.

The decision now rests with Vinicius. He can accept the improved contract and continue his career with Real Madrid, or leave open the possibility of a new challenge in the Premier League with Arsenal.
