Real Madrid bring in Sergio Martinez after triggering Racing Santander release clause

Real Madrid have agreed a deal to sign 19-year-old midfielder Sergio Martinez from Racing Santander after paying the €3m release clause in his contract.

Martinez will initially join Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side, but he will also have the opportunity to train with the first team. He is expected to sign a contract running until 2030.

Racing Santander confirmed the transfer in an official statement, saying: “Racing and Real Madrid have reached an agreement regarding the transfer of Sergio Martinez.”

The club added: “The Madrid club is committed to paying, in a single instalment, the entire amount established as the release clause in the contract that linked Racing with the player.”

Martinez came through Racing Santander’s academy and made his first appearance in the Spanish top flight this season after the club secured promotion. He scored in that match.

Racing used its announcement to pay tribute to a player who had progressed through every level of its youth system.

“We wish Sergio all the success he deserves. We are extremely proud of your development and of the way you have defended the club badge throughout these years. The sporting grounds at El Sardinero will always be your home,” the club said.

Martinez is right-footed and operates primarily as a central midfielder. Spanish newspaper AS described him as a highly complete and versatile player capable of performing several roles across midfield.

Although his natural inclination is considered slightly more attacking than defensive, he can play as a tempo-setter, a holding midfielder, a central midfielder or an attacking midfielder.

His athleticism is also regarded as a strength, particularly given his height, while his technical ability has marked him out as a player with considerable potential.

Real Madrid’s plan is for Martinez to begin his career with Real Madrid Castilla before progressing through the club’s structure towards the highest level. That pathway is intended to be based on natural development and sporting merit.

The move represents another step in the young midfielder’s rapid rise after his breakthrough with Racing Santander. His first-team debut, his goal in the Spanish top flight and his development within the academy have now been followed by a move to one of Europe’s leading clubs.
