Rayan Aït-Nouri’s decision to represent Algeria surprises Deschamps

French national team coach Didier Deschamps has reportedly been left stunned by Rayan Aït-Nouri’s decision to pledge his international allegiance to Algeria. The Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back, who had been on Deschamps’ radar for a potential call-up to the French senior team, chose instead to represent the country of his heritage.

The French newspaper L’Équipe revealed that Deschamps had been closely monitoring Aït-Nouri’s progress in the Premier League and had plans to integrate him into the French national setup.

The 23-year-old, who has previously represented France at youth levels, was viewed as a promising prospect for Les Bleus, particularly given his performances in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.

However, Aït-Nouri’s decision to commit to Algeria has been described as a “shock” to the French camp.

The player, who has consistently impressed with his pace, technical ability, and defensive skills, is expected to be a significant asset for the Desert Warriors.

His choice reflects a strong personal connection to his roots.

In a statement on his decision, Aït-Nouri said, Playing for the Algerian national team remains the choice of the heart.

I am proud to represent the country of my origins.

This declaration underscores the emotional and cultural factors that played a role in his commitment to Algeria, despite the allure of representing a world champion side like France.

Aït-Nouri’s career trajectory has been closely watched since he made his professional debut with Angers in France’s Ligue 1.

His move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 gave him a platform to showcase his talent on a larger stage, earning plaudits for his attacking contributions as well as his defensive solidity.

Algeria’s national team, led by coach Djamel Belmadi, is set to benefit from Aït-Nouri’s inclusion.

His experience at the highest levels of European football could prove invaluable as the Desert Warriors look to strengthen their squad for upcoming competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.

For Deschamps, the loss of Aït-Nouri is a reminder of the increasing competition between nations for dual-nationality players.

The French coach has previously managed to secure talents with dual heritage, but Aït-Nouri’s decision highlights the personal and emotional factors that often influence such choices.

With his switch to Algeria now official, Aït-Nouri will be a key figure for the North African side as they aim to solidify their position as one of the continent’s top teams.
