Ramos AI World Cup embrace with Messi sparks confusion online

Sergio Ramos has triggered a wave of confusion and debate after posting what appeared to be a real photograph of himself embracing Argentina captain Lionel Messi – only for fans to discover the image had been generated by artificial intelligence.

The former Spain and Real Madrid defender shared the picture on Instagram, showing him hugging his ex-Paris St-Germain team-mate Messi in Argentina colours, in what he presented as a poignant moment following the 2026 World Cup final.

The post quickly went viral, with many supporters assuming it was an authentic photograph captured on the pitch.

AI image, real moment

It later emerged that while the embrace between Ramos and Messi did genuinely take place, there was no actual still photograph of the moment.

Subsequent video clips circulated on social media confirmed that the two players had in fact hugged after the World Cup final. In the absence of an original still image, Ramos is understood to have opted to commemorate the scene using an AI-generated picture on his Instagram account.

Shirt details expose the edit

Online followers and image analysts began to scrutinise the post and noticed several inconsistencies in Messi’s Argentina shirt that revealed the image had been digitally created.

Key discrepancies included the absence of the official World Cup badge on the right sleeve – a detail present on all match shirts during the tournament.

From the back, the shirt design also failed to match Argentina’s current official kit. In the AI image, the jersey featured two vertical stripes reminiscent of the 2024-25 design, while the actual World Cup shirt uses a single broad central stripe.

Observers also pointed out that the font used for Messi’s name and number did not correspond to the official typography mandated for the World Cup, instead resembling an older style previously used by Argentina.

These visual anomalies led many users to conclude that the image was AI-generated, despite the emotional scene it portrayed being rooted in reality.
