Pupuma weighs up coaching future after Milford draw with Durban City

Milford FC head coach Dr Xanti Pupuma says the FIFA international break will give his team time to assess its start to the season, while also hinting that he could eventually step away from the role.

Pupuma was speaking after Milford were held to a 1-1 draw by Durban City in an entertaining KwaZulu-Natal Betway Premiership derby at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Stallions began slowly but improved as the match developed, according to their coach. Durban City recovered from falling behind when Luphumlo Sifumba scored the equaliser to secure a share of the points in an end-to-end contest.

Milford were also indebted to goalkeeper Frederick Asare, who kept them in the game with an important penalty save. The goalkeeper denied a Chilli effort as both sides looked for an advantage.

Pupuma said his players became more confident after a difficult opening period and were encouraged by the number of opportunities they created after half-time.

The Stallions repeatedly tested Asare in the second half and pressed for a winning goal, but neither team could find a decisive finish.

The Milford coach also discussed the departure of right-back Bulelani Sigomoshe, providing details of how the move to Orlando Pirates was completed and explaining the circumstances around the deal.

The international break now offers Milford the chance to review their opening stretch of the campaign. Pupuma said the club can consider what has worked so far and identify the areas in need of improvement before competitive action resumes.

The pause in the season could also lead to a change in the coaching structure. Pupuma indicated that he may relinquish the head-coaching position, with his assistants prepared to assume responsibility if that transition goes ahead.

His comments came after a match in which Milford showed improvement during the second half but were unable to turn their pressure into a winning goal. Durban City’s response through Sifumba ensured the points were shared after the visitors had initially taken the lead.
