PSG v Barcelona: European champions face another test in heavyweight clash

Paris Saint-Germain host Barcelona at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, in a Champions League league-phase meeting between the competition’s top two sides.

Both clubs have won their opening two European matches in 2026-27. Paris Saint-Germain beat Slovan Bratislava and Manchester City, while Hansi Flick’s Barcelona defeated Galatasaray and Feyenoord.

The holders have won the Champions League in each of the past two seasons and currently lead the continental standings. They are on course to reach the last 16 as league-phase winners after an impressive 6-0 victory at Manchester City last week.

Paris Saint-Germain were 3-0 ahead after 30 minutes at Etihad Stadium, despite Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, last season’s Champions League player of the year, not starting. It was the first time an away team had scored at least three first-half goals in a Champions League match at the stadium.

Manchester City won the second half “with” two Erling Haaland goals either side of a strike from Maghnes Akliouche, but Paris Saint-Germain’s dominant opening period had already settled the contest.

After failing to win any of their first three Ligue 1 matches this season, Luis Enrique’s side have now recorded six successive victories in all competitions. They followed the win over Manchester City with a 3-1 comeback victory at Strasbourg.

Paris Saint-Germain have scored 19 goals during that six-match run, averaging more than three per game, although their defence has been less convincing. The holders have kept only one clean sheet in 10 matches this season and have conceded in each of their past four games.

Barcelona have also kept just one clean sheet in their last seven matches, but their attack has been even more productive. Their nine Champions League goals rank joint second in the competition, behind Paris Saint-Germain’s 10.

Barcelona scored five against Feyenoord and then came from behind to beat Galatasaray 4-1 in Istanbul. They maintained their perfect start to the season on Saturday by beating Real Betis 5-2, making it 11 wins from 11 matches in all competitions and 48 goals scored.

The victory also made Barcelona the first side since Real Madrid in 1968 to win their opening nine La Liga matches of a season.

Paris Saint-Germain have won the past two meetings between the clubs, including a 2-1 victory at Camp Nou in the 2025-26 league phase. Barcelona’s most recent win in the fixture was a 3-2 away success in the 2024 quarter-final, but Paris Saint-Germain advanced after winning the second leg 4-1 six days later.

Senny Mayulu and Alessandro Longoni are Paris Saint-Germain’s only injury concerns, with both missing at Strasbourg because of leg bruises. Mayulu has since returned to team training.

Enrique rested Willian Pacho, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Fabian Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue at the weekend, and all are expected to return to the starting XI. Marquinhos was left out altogether to manage his workload.

Barcelona remain without Andreas Christensen and Roony Bardghji, while Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin picked up injuries against Real Betis. Kounde and Martin have ankle bruises, but Garcia requires further tests on a suspected thigh problem. Gabriel Jesus was also seen limping.

Raphinha, who has scored 14 goals, returned from a muscle problem against Real Betis and could start alongside Anthony Gordon.

The listed match predictions are Paris Saint-Germain to win with both teams scoring at 2.70, Ousmane Dembele to score at 2.07, and Lamine Yamal and Dembele both to be decisive at 2.22.

Probable teams: Paris Saint-Germain – Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Ruiz, Vitinha, Neves; Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia. Barcelona – J. Garcia; Kounde, Cubarsi, G. Martin, Cancelo; Pedri, Rodri; Yamal, Lopez, Gordon; Raphinha.
