PSG risks losing Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele in salary clash
Paris Saint-Germain are preparing to open contract extension talks with French superstar Ousmane Dembele once the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to an end, but negotiations could prove challenging as both parties remain divided over salary expectations.
Reports indicate that while PSG and the player are keen to continue their partnership, the financial terms of a new agreement may become a major obstacle.
Dembele has transformed into one of the most influential players in world football since joining PSG from Barcelona in the summer of 2023. Under the guidance of Luis Enrique, the winger has rediscovered his best form, helping the Paris club dominate domestically and in Europe while establishing himself as the centerpiece of the team’s attack. His remarkable performances culminated in winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or, cementing his place among the game’s elite.
The 29-year-old remains under contract until June 2028 and is regarded as one of the pillars of PSG’s long-term project. Enrique is believed to be eager to keep the French international at the club for many more years. However, discussions over an extension have been postponed until after France’s World Cup campaign.
Despite the mutual desire to continue together, Dembele is reportedly seeking a significant salary increase from his current earnings, estimated at around €1.5 million per month. PSG, meanwhile, are determined to maintain their new wage structure and are unwilling to make special exceptions, even for their Ballon d’Or-winning forward.
As a result, one side may need to compromise. If Dembele lowers his demands, a renewal could be completed smoothly. If PSG decide to improve their offer, an agreement may also be reached. Otherwise, what should be a straightforward extension could evolve into a difficult standoff, potentially opening the door to transfer discussions despite the player’s desire to remain in Paris.
