Colombe Sportive and Stade Malien leave CAF Champions League tie finely balanced

Colombe Sportive and Stade Malien played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first preliminary round tie at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde on Sunday.

The 0-0 scoreline leaves the contest open ahead of the decisive second leg, which will be played in Mali in a week’s time. Neither side was able to gain an advantage in a tightly contested opening meeting that produced no goals before the final whistle.

Colombe Sportive, known as the Oiseaux du Sud, found it difficult to break down a disciplined Stade Malien defence. The home side struggled to unsettle the visitors’ organised defensive block, with few opportunities developing in areas where their forwards could make a decisive impact.

Stade Malien, the Blancs de Bamako, approached the away fixture with caution and control. Travelling from Mali for a difficult continental assignment, the visitors focused on limiting the space available to Colombe Sportive’s attacking players.

That approach ensured the hosts were unable to find the openings needed to turn territorial pressure into goals. Stade Malien’s compact organisation repeatedly denied Colombe Sportive clear routes towards goal, while the home team could not produce the breakthrough required to take control of the tie.

As the match progressed, the deadlock remained intact. Neither team managed to find what the original French report describes as the regulatory opening before the end of the game, leaving the first encounter decided only by its scoreless outcome.

The result means the qualification battle will now be settled in the return fixture in Mali next week. Colombe Sportive will need to score away from home if they are to build a decisive advantage, while Stade Malien will take encouragement from having kept a clean sheet on their trip to Yaounde.

For both clubs, Sunday’s match represented the opening stage of their CAF Champions League campaign. However, despite the importance of the first preliminary round meeting, the contest remained extremely closed from beginning to end.

Neither side could separate itself from the other at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo. Colombe Sportive were unable to break through the visitors’ solid defensive structure, and Stade Malien’s careful management of the match prevented the home attack from finding exploitable spaces.

With no goals scored in Yaounde, the second meeting in Mali will decide which team can take the next step in the competition. The tie remains entirely balanced after the opening leg.
