PSG beat Arsenal on penalties to retain Champions League crown

Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Champions League for a second successive season after overcoming Arsenal in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw in the final.

Arsenal had been seeking the first European title in the club’s history, while Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain side were aiming to become champions again and complete back-to-back triumphs in the competition.

The Gunners made the stronger start and stunned the holders in the fifth minute. Kai Havertz stayed level with the final defender as he chased a forward pass on the wide side of the penalty area, then raced through before firing into the roof of the net from a difficult angle.

The match details recorded the goal in the sixth minute, with Ousmane Dembele equalising for Paris Saint-Germain in the 65th minute.

Paris Saint-Germain responded with increasing pressure. Fabian Ruiz came close to restoring parity after Desire Doue threaded a pass into the area, but his quick effort from around the six-yard box was kept out by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

The Ligue 1 champions continued to threaten before the interval. Arsenal struggled to deal with a low delivery from Nuno Mendes, and Ruiz met the loose ball with a close-range header, but sent it over the crossbar.

Dembele levels for PSG

Paris Saint-Germain found their way back into the contest midway through the second half. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia moved in from the near side and drew a foul from Cristhian Mosquera, giving Dembele the opportunity to take responsibility.

The France international stepped up and beat Raya to make it 1-1.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta turned to his substitutes as his team attempted to regain control. Viktor Gyokeres replaced Martin Ødegaard, while Jurrien Timber came on for Mosquera.

Paris Saint-Germain then went close to taking the lead. Kvaratskhelia won a 50-50 challenge against William Saliba and surged clear before shooting from a narrow angle. His attempt beat Raya but struck the outside of the post.

Neither team could find a winner during the remainder of normal time, sending the final into extra time. The additional 30 minutes followed the same pattern, with both sides unable to break the deadlock.

The trophy was therefore decided from the penalty spot.

Paris Saint-Germain held their nerve in the shoot-out, with Lucas Beraldo converting for the French side. Arsenal’s decisive setback came when Gabriel Magalhaes sent his penalty over the crossbar.

That miss allowed Paris Saint-Germain to claim their second consecutive UEFA Champions League title and break Arsenal hearts in the final.
