Pretoria turns gold as Mamelodi Sundowns celebrate historic second CAF Champions League title

Mamelodi Sundowns FC on Tuesday transformed Pretoria’s Church Square into a sea of yellow as the club staged a celebratory parade to mark their second CAF Champions League triumph.

The continental champions toured parts of the city, including their base in Mamelodi, before converging at the historic square where thousands of supporters gathered to honour the team’s latest African success, secured a decade after their first title in 2016, now adding a second crown in 2026.

Faith Mkhabela, who describes herself as the club’s number one supporter, was among the early arrivals at Church Square, eagerly awaiting the team’s arrival as the celebrations swept through the city.

She joined hundreds of fans dressed in club colours, turning the historic precinct into a vibrant display of yellow and blue as anticipation built for the champions’ arrival.

“We are excited to be meeting the team today; the champions of Africa who will be parading through Church Square. The trophy means a lot to us as we are now two-time champions, 2016 and 2026. We are really happy,” said Mkhabela

Mkhabela, proudly wearing her team’s T-shirt, also expressed excitement about getting her hands on the newly branded jersey featuring the club’s two-star status.

Fans hail historic double-star achievement

The atmosphere at Church Square reflected a city united in celebration, with supporters and residents of Tshwane filling the precinct in Sundowns colours.

The jubilant scenes turned the landmark into a vibrant festival ground, with music, chanting and a strong sense of pride following the club’s continental success.

Wayne Selopyane, a Tshwane resident and long-time supporter, described the mood as highly energetic, noting that the trophy carried significant meaning for the fanbase. He said the triumph had strengthened the bond between the team and its supporters after another historic African campaign.

City officials receive trophy as celebrations continue

The celebrations later moved into a formal moment when Mamelodi Sundowns presented the CAF trophy to Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya.

The gesture formed part of the club’s wider city tour, which highlighted their connection with the capital and its supporters following their continental triumph.

The parade continued into the evening as fans followed the team through the streets, extending the celebrations beyond Church Square and cementing a memorable day in Pretoria’s football history.
