Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has eased concerns over the fitness of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, revealing that the Barcelona star is progressing well and could even feature in the country’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Cape Verde.

Positive Reports from Barcelona

With questions lingering over Yamal’s availability ahead of the tournament, De la Fuente disclosed that the Spanish coaching staff has been receiving encouraging updates regarding the winger’s recovery. The coach also confirmed that the national team remains in close communication with clubs to monitor the condition of all players selected for the World Cup squad, including Nico Williams and Mikel Merino.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, De la Fuente said: “Firstly, we believe he will arrive in good condition. We are in constant contact with the clubs that keep us updated on his daily progress.”

De la Fuente Confident of Early Return

The Spain boss went a step further by expressing confidence that Yamal could be available sooner than initially expected. Earlier medical assessments had suggested the young forward might miss Spain’s first group stage fixture, but De la Fuente now believes the player is on course to be ready.

“We know he will arrive in excellent condition, and I dare say he will be ready for the first match, but we will continue to assess his progress,” the coach stated.

The comments will come as a major boost for Spain as they prepare for their World Cup campaign, with Yamal expected to play a key role in the team’s ambitions.

Praise for Yamal’s Maturity

Beyond discussing his fitness, De la Fuente also highlighted the maturity and professionalism Yamal has shown despite his age. The Spanish coach noted that the Barcelona star understands the responsibility that comes with being regarded as one of the brightest talents in world football.

De la Fuente stressed that continued growth and discipline will be essential as expectations around the youngster continue to rise.

“He needs to stay consistent, keep improving, keep working harder, and take better care of himself, although he already does,” the Spain manager said.

The coach remains convinced that Yamal possesses the mentality and commitment required to handle the pressure of performing on football’s biggest stage as Spain prepare for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
