Pochettino’s United States stay secured as federation broadens his remit

Mauricio Pochettino will remain in charge of the United States through the 2030 World Cup after United States Soccer confirmed a contract extension that ends uncertainty over his future.

The decision follows an internal review of the team’s progress and represents a commitment to the project that began in 2024. United States Soccer said it had been convinced that Pochettino’s work had established the foundations for a more competitive men’s national team.

Pochettino’s position had come under scrutiny after the United States were eliminated by Belgium in the last 16 of the World Cup held this summer. The hosts were beaten 4-1, but despite that result, the federation’s assessment of the manager’s overall work was positive.

Talks over extending his contract had already begun before the tournament, with United States Soccer ultimately deciding to continue with the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager.

“​​Mauricio and his team believe in the future of football in the United States, and our new project allows us to build on the progress made by the US men’s national team and the momentum enjoyed by United States Soccer,” said JT Batson, the organisation’s chief executive and secretary general.

Wider responsibilities for Pochettino

Pochettino will begin a new phase of his work with the United States aiming to take the team another step closer to the international elite.

His renewed agreement extends beyond responsibility for the senior side. He will also have a role in developing youth football, coaching coaches and working with the professional leagues in the country.

The broader remit reflects the federation’s desire to make Pochettino part of a wider football structure rather than limiting his influence to match preparation and first-team selection.

“We know there is a lot of work ahead of us to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win men’s World Cups and working to make football the most widely played sport in every community,” said Pochettino.

“I am extremely happy that Mauricio and his team are committed to working together with all of us to do the hard work necessary to achieve these ambitions.”

Pochettino’s continuation provides the United States with stability as the country seeks to strengthen its position as a footballing power ahead of the next World Cup.

The federation’s decision shows that the World Cup defeat by Belgium has not changed its belief in the direction of the programme. Instead, United States Soccer has opted to maintain the project launched in 2024 and give Pochettino responsibility for helping shape both the senior team and the wider development of the sport.

His new contract therefore secures continuity for the men’s national team while giving him a larger role across the American football system. The aim is to build on the progress identified by the federation and turn that foundation into a team capable of competing at the highest level.
