Petersen promises ‘exciting football’ as Fernando da Cruz begins Chiefs reign

Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen says supporters can expect “exciting football” from the club under new coach Fernando da Cruz.

Amakhosi began their league campaign with a victory over rookies Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday. Their next test comes on Sunday, when they host Golden Arrows in the MTN8 quarter-finals at FNB Stadium.

Da Cruz took charge last month after replacing interim co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze. The appointment represents a return to Chiefs for the coach, who had a short spell at the club two years ago as then-manager Nasredine Nabi’s first assistant.

Petersen believes the new coach’s approach is already shaping the team’s style and mentality.

“I think Chiefs fans can look forward to exciting football. Coach Fernando is a guy that wants the ball; he wants us on the ball, he wants us to play with confidence and express ourselves,” Petersen said.

“There are no limitations and as players we are responding well to that. The communication line between us as players and the new technical team has been open from the start. Everyone feels comfortable approaching each other.”

Chiefs strengthened their squad before travelling to Spain for their pre-season camp, signing defender Thabo Moloisane and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner.

The club have since added Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa and winger Langelihle Phili, who joined from Stellenbosch on Tuesday. Phili is 21 and has been described as an exciting prospect.

Petersen said the latest arrivals had settled quickly, with the players making an effort to ensure the newcomers felt part of the group. He also believes Da Cruz’s previous experience at Chiefs has helped establish a positive environment.

“The new players have been adapting very well. Coach Fernando is not new to a lot of us … I mean he was here two years ago,” the Chiefs captain said.

“The new guys have really felt at home. For us it’s important to create that sense of belonging for whoever comes in to make sure that they feel at home and feel welcomed.”

The captain’s comments come as Chiefs prepare for their first knockout fixture of the season against Golden Arrows. The match at FNB Stadium will provide Da Cruz with an early opportunity to progress in the MTN8 after making a winning start in the league.

Chiefs also confirmed on Wednesday morning that Congolese winger Glody Lilepo had left the club after being sold to Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi.

The transfer is the latest change to the Amakhosi squad during a period of major transition, with a new technical team and several fresh faces arriving before the opening weeks of the campaign.
