Paul Pogba’s Monaco future in doubt after injury-hit season raises major uncertainty over contract

French midfielder of Guinean descent Paul Pogba now facing an uncertain future at Monaco after his first season fell short of expectations.

The 33-year-old, who joined Monaco last summer on a two-year contract, has struggled to make an impact during his debut campaign. In total, Pogba has managed just six appearances, only one of which came as a starter, accumulating a mere 115 minutes of action across the season.

Given his pedigree and reputation as one of the standout midfielders of his generation, such limited involvement highlights the extent to which injuries and physical setbacks have disrupted his return to top-level football.

According to a reports, Pogba’s season has been significantly affected by recurring knee problems. The publication claims that the midfielder’s knee frequently swells, contributing to a cycle of muscular injuries as his body compensates for the underlying issue.

These fitness concerns have made it difficult for Pogba to establish rhythm or consistency, with Monaco’s coaching staff unable to rely on him for sustained periods throughout the campaign.

Despite the difficulties, there had been expectations that the midfielder could gradually build up his involvement over time. However, that progression never fully materialised, leaving his long-term role at the club in doubt.

Pogba signed a two-year deal upon his arrival in Monaco, but questions over whether he will see out the contract are now being openly discussed within the club structure. Earlier in the season, CEO Thiago Scuro hinted that the situation could be reassessed in the summer, especially if the player failed to accumulate meaningful minutes on the pitch.

Those concerns have now intensified as Pogba’s involvement remained minimal through the latter stages of the campaign.

Interestingly, Pogba appeared to signal his intention to remain at Monaco next season through a social media message, suggesting optimism about continuing his journey with the club. However, Nice-Matin reports that the post surprised some figures internally, as no formal discussions regarding his future had yet taken place at that stage.

The situation is further complicated by the circumstances surrounding his arrival. Pogba’s signing was reportedly driven largely by Monaco owner Dmitry Rybolovlev, rather than the club’s sporting leadership, with the owner also pushing for the midfielder to feature in a late-season appearance against FC Metz.

This internal dynamic adds another layer of complexity to any decision regarding his future, particularly as new head coach Filipe Luís prepares to define his squad structure and tactical direction.

With Monaco expected to undergo adjustments ahead of the new season, Pogba’s role remains unclear. Questions persist over whether he can physically handle a consistent midfield workload, what tactical function he would serve, and whether he would accept a reduced or rotational role if required.
