Paris Saint-Germain maintain perfect Champions League record with six-goal Villarreal win
Paris Saint-Germain swept aside Villarreal 6-0 to make it four wins from four in the Champions League and strengthen their position at the top of the table.
The holders moved on to 12 points, preserving their perfect record in the competition, while Villarreal remain on three points in 29th place.
Paris Saint-Germain took control of the fourth-round match with four goals in the first half. Joao Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Desire Doue doubled the advantage three minutes later.
Senny Mayulu added a third a minute after that, and Fabian Ruiz completed a four-goal burst. Paris Saint-Germain were 4-0 ahead at the interval.
The result saw Paris Saint-Germain claim a record for the fastest four-goal spell in Champions League history, reaching the mark in 16 minutes and two seconds. The holders also became the first team to score four times within an eight-minute period in the competition.
Mayulu’s goal was another landmark for the player, who has now scored in three consecutive matches for the first time in his career.
Ruiz added his second goal of the night in the 50th minute, finishing a fine individual effort to put Paris Saint-Germain 5-0 ahead.
David Boli completed the scoring in the 78th minute, giving the French side their second six-goal victory of the current Champions League campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain have now scored 20 goals across the opening four rounds. That total surpasses their tally at the same stage of the 2017-18 season, when they had scored 17.
The holders began this campaign with six goals against Slovan Bratislava, followed by 4-0 victories over Manchester City and Barcelona before another six-goal performance against Villarreal.
