Orlando Pirates win their first South African Premiership title in 14 years

Orlando Pirates ended their 14-year wait for the South African Premiership title after defeating Orbit College 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, bringing an end to Mamelodi Sundowns’ remarkable run of eight consecutive league crowns.

The Buccaneers entered the final day knowing victory would secure the championship, while any slip-up would hand Sundowns a ninth straight title. Sundowns had completed their campaign 11 days earlier due to preparations for the CAF Champions League final, leaving Pirates with destiny firmly in their own hands.

For Orbit College, survival was at stake. A draw would have guaranteed safety regardless of results elsewhere, but defeat coupled with Magesi’s 1-0 win over Richards Bay condemned the newcomers to automatic relegation.

Pirates dominated proceedings from the outset as Orbit, popularly known as the “Mswenko Boys”, sat deep in a bid to frustrate the hosts. Striker Yanela Mbuthuma spearheaded the pressure with relentless pressing that pinned Orbit inside their own half for long spells.

The early warning signs arrived almost immediately. In the second minute, Relebohile Mofokeng released Tshepang Moremi, whose effort flew over the bar before the offside flag was raised. Thalente Mbatha and Mofokeng both threatened soon after as Pirates searched for an early breakthrough.

Despite their control, Pirates struggled to convert dominance into goals during a tense first half. Moremi squandered a clear opportunity in the 34th minute after being played through by Oswin Appollis, while Appollis himself tested goalkeeper Nkomo with a series of probing attacks.

Orbit nearly stunned the title hopefuls against the run of play in the 44th minute when Lethabo Modimoeng met a corner, only to hook his effort wide with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine stranded.

However, Pirates finally found the breakthrough deep into first-half stoppage time. Nkomo attempted to punch clear from a corner under pressure from Mbatha but instead diverted the ball into his own net, handing the Buccaneers a crucial lead.

The goal settled nerves and Pirates emerged for the second half with greater confidence. Their advantage doubled just four minutes after the restart in equally dramatic fashion. Ngiba, attempting to deal with Mbatha’s pass from deep, sliced the ball into his own net ahead of the advancing Mbuthuma.

Orbit, needing a response to preserve their top-flight status, offered little attacking threat. Mbuthuma missed a chance to extend the lead midway through the half, while Nkomo partially redeemed himself with an impressive save to deny Kamogelo Sebelebele from close range.

As news filtered through of Magesi’s advantage against Richards Bay, Orbit’s hopes faded further. Inside Mbombela Stadium, Pirates supporters sensed history, chanting “Sekusele kancane sizophumelela” — “there is little time left; we are about to win.”

When the final whistle sounded, it confirmed a long-awaited triumph for Pirates and heartbreak for Orbit College.

The title ends years of frustration for the Soweto giants, who had finished runners-up five times during Sundowns’ dominant era. While Sundowns remained formidable under current coach Miguel Cardoso and reached another CAF Champions League final, Pirates’ steady rise ultimately shifted the balance of power.

Much of that progress has been built on astute recruitment, youth development and defensive solidity. Talents such as Mofokeng and Appollis played central roles throughout the campaign, while the club’s strategy of developing and profiting from young players strengthened its long-term foundation.

Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou also deserves significant credit after succeeding José Riveiro ahead of the season. Despite early doubts, the Moroccan tactician transformed Pirates into the league’s most disciplined defensive side, conceding just 12 goals all season.

For Pirates supporters, affectionately known as “The Ghost”, the moment carried deep emotional significance. Their last league title came in the 2011-12 campaign under Augusto Palacios.

A frustrating goalless draw against Durban City last weekend had delayed celebrations, but there would be no final-day disappointment this time.

After years of near misses and heartbreak, Orlando Pirates are champions once again.
