Orlando Pirates v Mamelodi Sundowns: Three battles that could decide MTN8 final

Orlando Pirates are aiming for a fifth successive MTN8 title when they meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday at 6pm.

The Durban decider could be shaped by a series of individual contests, with the following three match-ups likely to have a major impact on the outcome.

Lebone Seema v Brayan Leon

Lebone Seema has been one of the division’s most composed centre-backs, but Mamelodi Sundowns forward Brayan Leon is expected to provide his most demanding examination of the season.

Leon scored twice when the sides last met in February, helping Sundowns to a 2-1 league victory. That result remains Orlando Pirates’ most recent defeat.

At 23, Seema has regularly demonstrated an ability to remain calm under pressure. He is also an important part of Pirates’ build-up play, using forward passes that break lines and accurate deliveries over longer distances to help initiate attacks.

Leon, 25, presents a different kind of challenge. The Colombian is difficult to contain when operating with freedom, moving across the front line and making well-timed runs that have repeatedly caused problems for opposing defenders.

Marcelo Allende v Thapelo Mokobodi

Marcelo Allende’s experience of major matches could prove significant in his midfield duel with Thapelo Mokobodi.

Since arriving in SA in July 2022, Allende has appeared in more than four cup finals. Mokobodi, by contrast, has yet to play in one.

The 27-year-old Sundowns player is particularly effective in confined areas, where he can turn away from pressure and keep possession despite intense challenges. Those qualities have helped him win most of his midfield contests in the PSL.

Mokobodi, 23, will look to counter that influence through his determined approach and confidence in possession. His main route through defensive lines is rapid, fluid one-two passing, allowing him to connect the midfield with the attack.

Grant Kekana v Yanela Mbuthuma

Grant Kekana’s reading of the game has traditionally allowed him to limit opposing strikers, even though he does not rely on pace. Against Yanela Mbuthuma, he will face a forward whose greatest asset is his physical strength.

Kekana, 33, can draw on considerably more experience than the 24-year-old Orlando Pirates striker, who has not been involved at the top level for as long.

Mbuthuma’s power has often enabled him to overcome defenders, and it could be decisive again. Kekana tends to defend through intelligent positioning and marking rather than following an opponent closely in a man-to-man role, placing added importance on how he manages the striker’s physical threat.
