Orlando Pirates recovered from their MTN8 final defeat by beating TS Galaxy 3-0 at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, a result that kept them within one point of Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Buccaneers remain second in the standings, with a game in hand over Sundowns, who strengthened their position at the top with a 4-1 victory against Richards Bay FC in Durban on the same night.
Boitumelo Radiopane gave Pirates the lead in the 18th minute before substitute Tshepang Moremi doubled their advantage five minutes after half-time. Simphiwe Masilela completed the scoring in the 76th minute with another impressive contribution from the young midfielder.
The victory was an important response for Pirates after they lost Saturday’s MTN8 final to Mamelodi Sundowns. It also extended their winning run in the league to six matches, during which they have not conceded a goal.
That defensive record represents another milestone for goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
TS Galaxy, managed by Essau Mtsweni in the absence of former coach Bernard Parker, had the better chances during the opening 15 minutes. However, Victor Letsoalo, Sedwyn George and Junior Zindoga were all unable to find the target.
Pirates eventually took control of the match after Appollis capitalised on a miscalculation by Galaxy goalkeeper Tape Ira. The attacker supplied Radiopane, who finished the move by putting the ball into the net.
Galaxy responded quickly and came close to creating an opening of their own when Pirates’ defence was breached. Chaine reacted alertly, moving off his line to clear the danger.
Pirates started the second half strongly and increased their lead through Moremi. The substitute collected the ball close to goal and struck from close range, leaving Ira with no chance.
The home side were dealt a setback soon afterwards when Appollis was carried off on a stretcher. Pirates manager Abdeslam Ouaddou will hope the injury is not serious, with the club facing a demanding run of fixtures in the league, Carling Knockout and the Champions League over the coming weeks.
Masilela then put the outcome beyond doubt by finishing a decisive attacking move that cut through the Galaxy defence.
The result leaves Galaxy without a league victory in their past four matches, placing further pressure on their attempt to revive a struggling campaign.
