Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained Thalente Mbatha’s omission from the squad that secured a 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday, saying the club is being careful with the midfielder as he continues his recovery.
Mbatha’s absence was notable after he had played in the MTN8 final. However, Ouaddou said Pirates did not want to expose the player to unnecessary risk so soon after his return from injury.
Mbatha underwent surgery after returning from international duty, and Ouaddou said his appearance in the final had itself been unexpected following an extensive rehabilitation programme.
“Mbatha – you know when he came back from the national team he had surgery, we did everything to bring him back in terms of rehabilitation, and I think it was a surprise for you to see him in the MTN8 final,” Ouaddou said.
The coach was particularly impressed by Mbatha’s display in that match, describing it as the midfielder’s best performance for some time.
“I was so amazed about his performance in the final, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen such quality of Mbatha, high-level. So we don’t want to take risks with Mbatha.”
Pirates were back in action only two days after the final, leaving Ouaddou unwilling to select a player he regards as an important part of his squad.
“He’s an important player for us. So we play two days after and we don’t want to take any risks about him.”
The midfielder will now continue working towards full fitness as Orlando Pirates navigate a congested schedule. His recovery comes with the next Bafana Bafana squad due to be announced in the coming weeks.
