Orlando Pirates close in on Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Sibangani Zulu signings ahead of new season

Orlando Pirates are closing in on the signings of Stellenbosch FC midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Richards Bay FC defender Sibangani Zulu as the club intensifies preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.

The Buccaneers have moved swiftly in the transfer market as they seek to strengthen their squad for both domestic and continental assignments next season.

Pirates enjoyed a historic campaign, securing a domestic treble after lifting the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup and Betway Premiership titles. Their league triumph was particularly significant, ending a 14-year wait for the championship.

The Soweto giants are now setting their sights on further success, especially in continental football after qualifying for the CAF Champions League. Their ambitions have reportedly been fuelled by rivals Mamelodi Sundowns’ recent triumph in the competition.

Reports indicate that both Mthiyane and Zulu completed their medical examinations last week and are now in the final stages of finalising moves to the Sea Robbers.

The two players stood out for their respective clubs during the just-ended season and established themselves as key figures.

Mthiyane, who joined Stellenbosch FC at the start of the season from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Milford FC, adapted quickly and became an influential presence in midfield. In his debut campaign with the Cape Winelands outfit, he made 38 appearances across all competitions and scored once.

Zulu, meanwhile, strengthened his reputation as a dependable defender following his move to Richards Bay FC in April last year after Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League. The centre-back featured in 27 matches for the KwaZulu-Natal side and contributed one assist.

Should the deals be completed, Pirates would secure two players viewed as valuable additions as they prepare for another demanding season on multiple fronts.
