Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka calls for calm as Coventry City look to bounce back after Southampton defeat

Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka has urged Coventry City to quickly regroup and move on after a frustrating 2–1 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Championship.

The loss at the Coventry Building Society Arena ended Coventry’s six-match unbeaten run, halting the momentum the team had built in the league. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Coventry were unable to convert their chances, leaving the players disappointed but determined to focus on upcoming fixtures.

Speaking after the match to the club’s media team, Onyeka acknowledged the team’s frustration but emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective and preparing for the next challenge.

“It was a good game, but unfortunately we could not get the win today,” Onyeka said. “We had lots of chances which didn’t go in. It’s just one of those days. We have to pick ourselves up and go into the next game.”

The Nigerian midfielder also highlighted the importance of using the setback as motivation.

“The defeat isn’t something any player wants, but again, it’s one of those days where we have to accept what has happened and use it to fuel us in the next game,” Onyeka added.

Onyeka admitted that while Coventry took the lead during the match, missed opportunities ultimately prevented them from securing a positive result.

“When we scored, we thought it was time to go for a point, but at the same time, there were other chances,” he explained. “It’s disappointing, but there’s nothing to dwell on here.”

Coventry City now turn their attention to their next league fixture, looking to restore confidence and continue their push up the Championship table. Onyeka’s call for composure and resilience reflects the team’s determination to learn from setbacks and build momentum for the remainder of the season.
