“I might not make it” – Nico Williams fears he could miss Spain’s World Cup opener
Spain winger Nico Williams has admitted he may not be fit in time for his country’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as he continues his recovery from injury.
The Athletic Bilbao star offered an honest update on his condition while speaking in comments reported by El Chiringuito, revealing that he is progressing steadily but remains uncertain about his readiness for the start of the tournament.
“Well, I am progressing step by step in my recovery from injury. I think I am much better now. I expect that I may not be ready for the first match in the World Cup, but that’s okay. I have a great desire and I will continue working on Saturday,” Williams said.
The 23 year old has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines in recent months, missing valuable time with Athletic Bilbao during a crucial stage of the season.
Reflecting on the difficult period, Williams admitted the injury setback affected him deeply both professionally and personally.
“It is very important for me, because the past period was difficult, I was unable to help my team, and on a personal level I want to make up for that in the World Cup, it is very important for me,” he added.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his fitness, Williams remains optimistic about Spain’s chances at the tournament and believes the national team can build on the momentum from their impressive performances at the European Championship.
“I think we have a great team, we have proven that on more than one occasion. We know how to play and what we want to achieve. We have a great coach, and I am confident that the football we played in the Euros we will play again in the World Cup,” he stated.
Williams has become one of the most dangerous attacking players in Luis de la Fuente’s squad thanks to his pace, creativity, and direct style of play. His possible absence for Spain’s opening fixture would be a major concern for supporters eagerly anticipating another strong international campaign.
With the World Cup fast approaching, the winger now faces a race against time to regain full fitness and secure his place on football’s biggest stage
