Ngwenya chasing AmaZulu goalscoring greats after explosive start

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is already being mentioned alongside AmaZulu FC’s most celebrated strikers after scoring five goals in his first four matches of the season.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwean international’s form has taken him to the top of the Betway Premiership scoring charts and helped AmaZulu rise to fourth in the table. His performances also earned him the Betway Premiership Player of the Month award for August.

Ngwenya’s rapid impact has revived memories of the forwards who have made their mark in AmaZulu’s history. If he can sustain his current scoring rate, he could eventually join an elite group of Usuthu attacking idols.

Ntuli’s lasting legacy

The benchmark remains Bonginkosi “Bongi” Ntuli, AmaZulu’s all-time leading scorer with 36 goals.

Ntuli played a decisive role in keeping the club in the top flight during the 2019/20 season. At one stage of that campaign, he scored 12 of the team’s 14 goals, underlining the importance of his finishing and his ability to deliver under pressure.

His consistency made him a club legend before his tragic passing in November 2023.

Ngwenya’s current run is still in its early stages, but the comparison with Ntuli reflects the significance of his opening weeks in the campaign. Five goals in four matches have placed the Zimbabwean at the centre of AmaZulu’s challenge near the top of the standings.

Majoro’s goalscoring consistency

Lehlohonolo Majoro is another striker whose name remains firmly attached to the club’s history.

Majoro scored 11 goals during his first spell with AmaZulu in the 2010/11 season. His performances earned him a move to Kaizer Chiefs, where he continued his career before returning to AmaZulu in 2019.

After coming back to the club, Majoro added 46 league goals over four seasons. His extended contribution demonstrated the durability and consistency associated with the club’s leading forwards.

Ngwenya will now hope to build a similarly significant record at AmaZulu, although his immediate focus will be maintaining the momentum that has taken him to the top of the Betway Premiership scoring standings.

Dearnaley’s cup-final contribution

George Dearnaley also occupies an important place in AmaZulu’s past.

His finishing played a key part in the club’s 1992 Coca-Cola Cup final victory over Kaizer Chiefs, with Dearnaley scoring in the match. That triumph remains part of the club’s notable history and adds another name to the list of forwards remembered by AmaZulu supporters.

Ngwenya has yet to match the achievements of those established figures, but his start has created the possibility of a place among them. The Durban faithful will be hoping their Zimbabwean star can continue scoring and drive AmaZulu even higher up the table.
