Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure’s shared journey fuels Australia’s World Cup dream

Australia’s rising football talents Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure are set to bring a powerful personal story to the global stage as they prepare for the FIFA World Cup in North America.

The duo share a close friendship built on similar life experiences, both arriving in Australia as refugees before forging professional careers in football.

Toure was born in a refugee camp in Guinea to Liberian parents, while Irankunda, born to Burundian parents in Tanzania, also found a new beginning in South Australia.

Their football paths converged at Adelaide United, where both developed through the club’s ranks before stepping into the spotlight as two of Australia’s most promising young players.

For Toure, representing Australia at the World Cup carries deep personal meaning.

“It would mean a lot to me and my family,” he said. “It’s the country that gave us the opportunity to live, so I think it would be the best way to pay back and do what I love at the top level.”

Australia head into the tournament in North America in confident mood, drawn in a challenging Group D alongside Paraguay, Turkey and co-hosts the United States.

The Socceroos begin their campaign against Turkey in Vancouver on June 13, with expectations high that the youthful energy of players like Irankunda and Toure could play a defining role in their journey.
