Nabil Bentaleb: Former Spurs midfielder weighs up Lyon move after leaving Lille

Nabil Bentaleb is at the centre of a key career decision this summer, with Olympique Lyonnais pushing to sign the Algeria international after his contract with Lille expired.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who spent the 2025-26 season at LOSC, is currently without a club despite having been offered an extension in northern France. Instead, he has opted to pause and reflect on his next move, aware that his choice could shape the remainder of his professional career.

Bentaleb, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and Schalke 04, remains a highly regarded profile on the European market. His tactical awareness, passing range and ability to dictate tempo from midfield have ensured he is attracting strong interest.

Lyon move gathers pace

Among the clubs keen to secure his services is Lyon. According to French outlet Onze Mondial, OL coach Paulo Fonseca is eager to convince Bentaleb to join the seven-time French champions.

The potential transfer carries added significance because the pair already know each other well. Fonseca and Bentaleb worked together at Lille during the 2023-24 season, developing a professional relationship that could prove decisive as the player weighs up his next step.

Reports suggest Lyon have gone beyond monitoring and have formally submitted a contract offer to the Algerian, although the length of the proposed deal has not been disclosed. The move underlines OL’s intention to reinforce their midfield with an experienced, tactically disciplined player capable of bringing greater balance and stability.

Lille still in the frame

Lille, however, have not given up hope of keeping Bentaleb. The northern club, who offered him a new deal before his contract expired, are keen to retain his services after a solid campaign in which his leadership and technical ability were highly valued.

The situation leaves Bentaleb facing a strategic choice: extend his stay in familiar surroundings at Lille, where he is appreciated and already established in the squad, or embrace a fresh challenge in Lyon under a manager he already trusts.

His market value is currently estimated at around €4.5m (£3.8m) by football data site Transfermarkt. During his time at Lille, Bentaleb reportedly earned around €1m per year (approximately 650m FCFA), underlining the level of financial commitment any future club is likely to make.

Decision looming for Algeria international

Bentaleb is understood to be in a period of rest as his holidays draw to a close, using the time to assess the sporting projects in front of him. With pre-season preparations already under way across Europe, the midfielder is expected to make a decision in the coming days.

For Lyon, securing Bentaleb would represent an important step in rebuilding a side that has fluctuated in recent seasons, offering Fonseca a player he knows can execute his game plan in central areas.

For Lille, losing him on a free transfer would mean replacing not just a key squad member, but also an experienced organiser in midfield.

As the new campaign approaches, the former Spurs and Schalke player stands at a crossroads. Whether he opts for continuity at LOSC or a reunion with Fonseca at Lyon, his next contract is likely to be one of the most significant of his career.
