Former Al Ahly SC striker Emad Moteab has strongly criticised the club’s players following their disappointing third-place finish in the Egyptian Premier League this season.

Al Ahly ended the campaign behind champions Zamalek SC and runners-up Pyramids FC after the title race concluded dramatically on Wednesday evening.

“Al Ahly Being Third Is Unacceptable”

Speaking during a television interview, Moteab admitted he was deeply saddened by the outcome of the season and insisted the players must take responsibility for the failure.

“Hard luck to Al-Ahly fans, not the players. Al-Ahly being in third place is a situation I haven’t seen in years.”

He continued: “I cannot accept that Al-Ahly is in third place, but in general I accept winning and losing, but Al-Ahly players have only themselves to blame, as they are the reason for being in third place, which is an unacceptable ranking.”

Calls for Major Review at the Club

Moteab also stressed that the disappointing campaign should serve as a warning sign for the club’s management ahead of next season.

“The loss could cause a wake-up call, but Al-Ahly needs an administrative and technical review, as well as the way players, both professionals and locals, are selected.”

The former striker believes important decisions must be made during the offseason despite the team showing signs of improvement in recent matches.

“In the coming period, many things must happen at Al-Ahly, which has improved its image in the last 3 matches, but the start of next season must be strong and make the fans forget what happened this season.”

Moteab Praises Zamalek’s Achievement

Despite his disappointment with Al Ahly, Moteab acknowledged the achievement of Zamalek and praised their determination throughout a difficult season.

“We were very happy when Al-Ahly won championships before, but in the end, Zamalek made a great effort under difficult circumstances, and it is their right to celebrate and be happy with a very precious championship title, and the players worked very hard to win the title.”
