Auxerre’s defensive midfielder Oussama El-Azzouzi will miss the next two Ligue 1 fixtures following his red card in the 3-4 defeat to Lille on Sunday.
The Moroccan international was dismissed in the closing minutes after a confrontation with Lille’s left-back Romain Perraud.
The Professional Football League (LFP) Disciplinary Committee reviewed the incident on Wednesday evening and handed both players two-match suspensions.
Central defenders Nathan Ngoy (Lille) and Clément Akpa (Auxerre), who were also involved in the altercation, received one-match suspensions, with Ngoy’s sanction including a suspended match.
The decisions reflect the LFP’s continued focus on maintaining discipline and fair play within the league.
El-Azzouzi joined Auxerre on loan from Bologna during the summer transfer window and remains under contract with the Italian club until 2027.
The 23-year-old has earned six caps for Morocco and previously competed at the Africa Cup of Nations under-23 level, showcasing his growing experience at both club and international stages.
The suspension comes at a crucial point in Auxerre’s season as the team seeks stability in midfield ahead of key fixtures.
El-Azzouzi’s absence will require the coaching staff to adjust their central midfield setup and manage rotations carefully to maintain competitive balance.
In a separate disciplinary measure, Ligue 2 side Amiens received sanctions following “discriminatory remarks” directed at a Guingamp player from the stands, highlighting the league’s commitment to combating misconduct by players and supporters alike.
Auxerre now faces the challenge of navigating upcoming matches without one of their key midfield figures, while Lille and other clubs involved must also adapt to the consequences of suspensions resulting from the heated encounter.
