Mohamed Salah to Saudi Arabia gathering pace

Saudi Pro League clubs believe they are in a strong position to finally land Mohamed Salah this summer, helped by a new funding model that will inject money across all 18 teams over the next four years.

The Liverpool star has quickly become the standout target as the league looks to add more global names.

According to reports, Liverpool have agreed in principle to let Salah leave on a free transfer next month, even though his current contract runs until 2027. Saudi sides see this as a huge opportunity after Al Ittihad’s £150m offer was turned down in 2023. With fresh financial backing, they are ready to try again for the Egyptian forward.

Saudi Pro League CEO Omar Mugharbel summed up the league’s growing confidence, saying: “The question is no longer whether players will join the SPL but rather who is next?” Spending might not hit the explosive levels of the 2023 window, but the long-term project remains fully supported, especially with Saudi Arabia set to host the 2034 World Cup.

The revamped funding structure aims to spread investment more evenly, rewarding both sporting success and fan interest as the league pushes its expansion plans.
