Mohamed Ali helps Sporting Lisbon win Portuguese Handball Super Cup

Sporting Lisbon, led by Egypt international goalkeeper Mohamed Ali, won the Portuguese Handball Super Cup after beating Benfica 31-24.

Sporting Lisbon established control of the match in the first half, taking a 15-6 lead into the interval. Benfica were unable to overturn that deficit after the break as Sporting completed a convincing victory and secured another piece of silverware.

The triumph is Sporting Lisbon’s seventh Portuguese Handball Super Cup title. It is also the club’s fourth successive success in the competition, extending a run of dominance that has now continued across four consecutive editions.

The victory adds to an increasingly successful spell for Mohamed Ali since he joined Sporting Lisbon. The Egyptian goalkeeper has now won three Portuguese Super Cups with the club, making this his third title in the competition while wearing Sporting’s colours.

Ali has also collected two Portuguese league titles and two Portuguese Cups during his time with Sporting Lisbon. His latest Super Cup success further strengthens his record of honours in Portugal and gives the goalkeeper another major trophy with the club.

Sporting’s win was built on a commanding opening half. The 15-6 advantage at the interval gave the Lisbon side a nine-goal cushion, and the eventual 31-24 scoreline confirmed their superiority over Benfica.

For Benfica, the defeat ended their hopes of taking the Super Cup, while Sporting Lisbon maintained their grip on the trophy. The seven-title record, together with four consecutive victories, underlines the club’s sustained success in the competition.

Ali’s involvement also reflects his continued place in the Sporting Lisbon squad. The Egypt international renewed his contract with the club in March, extending his association with the Portuguese side.

The goalkeeper’s collection of honours now includes two Portuguese league championships, two Portuguese Cups and three Portuguese Super Cups. Sporting’s latest victory means he has played a part in another title-winning campaign, with the club once again overcoming Benfica to claim the trophy.

The 31-24 result, following the 15-6 half-time score, ensured Sporting Lisbon retained the Portuguese Handball Super Cup and added the club’s seventh title in the competition to its honours list.
