Mofokeng’s two-goal display gives Bafana Bafana fresh attacking edge

Relebohile Mofokeng delivered a composed, influential performance as Bafana Bafana beat Eritrea 5-0 in their second Afcon qualifier, underlining the progress he has made since joining Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The 21-year-old scored twice before half-time at Cairo’s Al Salam Stadium on Wednesday night, combining intelligent movement with the confidence and precision required to punish Eritrea.

His first goal helped set Bafana Bafana on their way, while the second reflected his growing quality. Mofokeng created room for himself before sending a powerful, low shot beyond the goalkeeper with precision.

The display showed more than improved fitness following his move to the Belgian Pro League. Mofokeng also appeared increasingly comfortable in a high-pressure international setting, taking responsibility when his team needed an attacking spark.

That influence was particularly significant as senior teammate Iqraam Rayners struggled to make an impact. Mofokeng emerged as Bafana Bafana’s main threat, offering a level of directness and control that set him apart.

His development has not altered his relationship with Oswin Appollis. The pair, who are close friends, continued to combine naturally, finding one another with vision and understanding throughout the match.

Mofokeng’s contribution was not limited to running beyond the defence. He also showed an awareness of when to manage the game’s tempo, using his body to turn opponents and release the next pass rather than always attempting to accelerate the attack.

His freedom on the pitch suggests Pitso Mosimane is allowing him to develop while playing to his strengths, despite concerns that the manager’s demanding methods could restrict individual creativity.

Mofokeng’s confidence also appeared to benefit those around him. Appollis responded strongly after Mosimane’s critical assessment of his performance in the 2-1 victory over Guinea, producing three assists against Eritrea and looking composed throughout.

Bafana Bafana’s wider performance reflected that increased assurance. Sphephelo Sithole controlled the midfield before being substituted, helping the team dictate play and creating room for others to move into attacking positions. He also scored.

With Teboho Mokoena unavailable and Bathusi Aubaas replacing him, Sithole took on a senior role and helped debutant Brooklyn Poggenpoel settle without showing signs of nerves.

Mofokeng’s performance should not yet lead to claims that he is ready to carry Bafana Bafana, particularly after Mosimane highlighted the shortage of natural goal poachers among South African footballers.

There remain areas for him to improve, especially when his side does not have possession. However, his progress is increasingly evident. Mofokeng is developing in the manner Mosimane demands and could become a central figure for both Bafana Bafana and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
