Mngqithi beats Barker as Young Africans win Tanzania Community Shield

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has claimed his first trophy outside South Africa after Young Africans defeated fellow South African Steve Barker’s Simba SC 1-0 in Tanzania’s Community Shield.

Mngqithi, who took charge of Young Africans before the start of the 2026/27 season, saw his side secure an early victory over their traditional rivals at the New Amaan Complex on Wednesday evening.

Albert Kangwanda scored the only goal of the match in the 31st minute, giving the attacking midfielder the decisive contribution in a closely contested encounter.

The triumph provides Mngqithi with an immediate reward at the beginning of his time in charge of the Tanzanian giants. He has also recruited fellow South Africans to his technical team as Young Africans pursue domestic and continental success during the new campaign.

Barker is entering his second season with Simba SC. However, the 2026/27 campaign will be his first full season leading the club after he took over in December 2025.

The Community Shield result continues Young Africans’ recent advantage over Simba in the competition. Yanga defeated their traditional rivals by the same 1-0 scoreline in last year’s meeting.

The two South African coaches are expected to be prominent figures in Tanzanian football this season, having arrived with significant experience gained during successful spells in South Africa.

Their appointments have brought an additional South African dimension to one of Tanzania’s biggest football rivalries. Both managers are now under pressure to deliver silverware for clubs with substantial expectations and large support bases.

For Mngqithi, Wednesday’s win represents an early statement of intent and gives him a trophy at the start of his Young Africans tenure. Barker and Simba, meanwhile, have been given an early indication of the task facing them as they prepare for the league campaign.

Young Africans and Simba will meet twice in the Tanzanian Premier League this season. Those fixtures will form part of the fiercely contested Kariakoo Derby, adding further significance to the teams’ meetings during the campaign.

The Community Shield victory is Mngqithi’s first piece of silverware abroad and gives him an early advantage over his compatriot. But with the league season still ahead, both coaches remain responsible for guiding clubs expected to challenge for major honours.

For Barker, the defeat offers an early reminder of the competitive demands at Simba. For Mngqithi, it marks a promising beginning as he attempts to establish his side as a force in both Tanzanian and continental football.
