Messi bows out with grace as Ronaldo’s Portugal dispute exposes football’s great divide

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have taken sharply different paths towards the end of their international careers, with Messi receiving an emotional farewell in Buenos Aires while Ronaldo publicly explained his decision to leave Portugal’s camp.

After helping Argentina beat Benin 3-0 early on Wednesday, Messi watched a drone display form his image above the Estadio Monumental before addressing more than 85,000 supporters.

The 39-year-old was given a standing ovation in the 10th minute, marking an international career in which he has won numerous trophies with the Albiceleste.

Messi also stood beside a banner reading “The Malvinas are Argentine”, a politically sensitive message that was largely overlooked by the crowd as they celebrated him.

“Now I’m here on the saddest day of my career, which is the day I have to say goodbye to the national team, goodbye to all of you,” Messi said.

“But now I’ll be on that side with the fans, supporting all the boys, everyone who comes in. Always united.”

Hours earlier, Ronaldo had used social media to give his version of the events that led to him leaving Portugal during their Uefa Nations League campaign.

In a statement of almost 2,000 words, Ronaldo said coach Jorge Jesus had assured him he would come on for 30 minutes against Norway after managing his recovery schedule. Ronaldo warmed up at half-time but remained an unused substitute, leaving him believing that the agreement had been broken.

He was then told he would not play against Denmark and became further frustrated when Jesus did not follow a script about his absence that had been approved by Ronaldo.

Ronaldo left the camp, boarded a private flight and missed Portugal’s match against Denmark. His decision drew further attention when Portugal went on to beat both Norway and Denmark without him.

Despite the dispute, the 41-year-old said he remained available for international selection and apologised for departing.

“I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp,” Ronaldo wrote.

“Despite the absolute breakdown of trust in the head coach’s word, I shouldn’t have done it. The responsibility is mine alone.

“I apologise to the Portuguese people once again, but a broken word has a defining impact. I felt that, from that moment on, my presence would only harm the group, and I did what I always said I would do if I didn’t feel useful: I picked up my bags and left.”

Ronaldo’s supporters will argue that the apology should end the controversy and that he is entitled to decide how his international career concludes.

The contrast with Messi was stark. Messi’s farewell was marked by acceptance and a focus on Argentina’s future, while Ronaldo’s response was directed towards defending his own position.

The Moon, Jupiter and Regulus a star 79 light-years away were in conjunction on the night of Messi’s farewell. But the difference between the two endings was not determined by the stars. It came from the choices made by two players confronting the same unavoidable question: whether to accept the end or resist it on their own terms.
